Game 8

2024 All-Star Showcase

For some girls, this will be the last middle school game they’ll ever play and for others, there’s another year and travel basketball will bridge the gap between the end of this season and the start of 2024-25.  This year’s 2024 GMSH All-Star Showcase proved to be an awesome time of basketball, competition, and relationships between friends- new and old.  Some great takeaways that I saw throughout the day in the 8 games I watched are listed below.  One thing is for sure, this state is TALENT RICH in basketball players.

Game 1

Game 2

Game 3

Game 4

Game 5

  • Jalia Scott

    Austin Road Middle School

Jalia showed up and showed dropping 14 points for her team in a winning effort with the ability to facilitate some others to get baskets. Jaila defended two of the other team’s better guards and kept them from seeing double digits. I like her game especially in transition, she seems to really excel when she’s heading downhill to the basket with the defense on their heels.

  • Aniya Hill

    Coile Middle School

Aniya was on fire and in her bag early with cross overs leaving defenders on skates and finishing at the basket to help her team get this win. She dropped 14 points in and all of them were in the paint attacking the rim. She had it going early from the right side of the basket and just kept it going until the final horn sounded. Look out for this guard and what she does over the next 4 years at Cedar Shoals High School. With her ball handling and her ability to finish she’s going to be put up a lot of points.

Game 6

  • Damaria "Icebox" Colburn

    Wilbanks Middle School

I had Damaria in the Elite 48 which she did a very good job for me BUT this past Saturay in the All Star Showcase she was just on another level scoring the basketball. No one could stay in front of her, and her first step was so fast and so strong that she would have her shoulders past the defenders before they could even scream for help. Her finishes at the rim were through contact and her step back 3 was something from a video game. Her stock is trending way up and she’s one of the hottest 2028 players in my book right now. Coming off scoring 300 points in her middle school season to what I saw from her Saturday is just incredible. She was nominated and selected as the 2028 Offensive Player of the Year, and she certainly showed it with 18 points and 2 from the 3-point line. I’m a huge fan of her game right now and can’t wait to see what she does as she transition to high school. Well-deserved MVP of Game #6.

  • Sidney Crouch

    East Jackson Middle School

Crouch really got after it in game #6 and I loved the effort she played with and the offensive rebounding she did around the glass was superb. She finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds to a very good offensive Eastern Team. With the effort and energy, she put on display in the All Star Showcase she has a great foundation to build on heading into her post-season and pre-season before her 8th grade year. Looking forward to seeing what this 2029 forward does to build on her showing this past Saturday.

Game 7 - Boys

Game 8

  • Millie Southards

    Rabun County Middle School

Millie was able to win the 3-point shootout with some incredible shooting and then won the MVP of game #8 with a LOT of talent on the floor. Millie scored 11 points for a team high in a tight game that went down to the last shot and defensive stop by the Western Team. Millie has two components to her game that she can go to at any time. She can shoot the 3 like a guard and can shoot it off the dribble or spot up for someone to drive and kick. Then she can also go to her post play type game where she goes inside and just goes to work on anyone trying to guard her. She is quick on the ground and can hang in the air and finish through contact. This kids very strong around the basket and just causes a lot of nightmares for someone trying to guard her unless they are physically stronger than her or they have good shot blocking ability. Millie is one of the TOP players in that 2029 class and I’d put her as far up as in the top 5 after seeing her play this past season and seeing her in the Elite 48 and the All-Star Showcase. Her ceiling is high, and she continues to trend up every time I see her compete in a game or a drill. Her sister is heading to college to play and I would bet my car on it that Millie will be as well coming out of one of the best run basketball programs in the state that Coach Dee Dee Dillard runs in Rabun County.

NGS ELITE 60 PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS

Lawrenceville, Georgia — The NGS Elite 60 showcased a huge amount of talent in a state known for being talent rich.  There were several big-name players in the building including #1 ranked 6’8 Erick Dampier Jr., leaving spectators like me thrilled with outstanding performances. I want to first take a minute to commend how well the NGS staff is with customer service.  I was greeted at the door by the friendliest people who just had a great vibe and atmosphere about them.  I’ve been to a lot of venues and events where it just seemed like a money grab, and they didn’t really care about the basketball or the customers.  I was also treated to highly competitive games, featuring deep rosters of talented players that will be highly recruited once they reach that high school level.  While Erick Dampier Jr. didn’t disappoint, I want to push some names that I didn’t know about before I sat down to watch that really caught my attention. These players featured below are what I call “fly under the radar” guys that I think can really blossom into something special with how they play the game and their ceiling of potential.

FAB 48 PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS

Athens, Georgia — The Fab 48 was held at Athens Academy August 26th & 27th, 2023 for the 2nd year in a row. This event featured 48 girls from all over the state coming to Athens to show the skills they have crafted over many unseen hours in the gym. Some working with trainers, some working with travel basketball coaches, and some just working in their backyard. It was evident very quickly that the gym was full of talent, and each girl was there to try and stake her claim to why she thought she was one of the state’s top players. The weekend started off with 2 hours of skill work and then went into skills competitions: lay-ups and hot shot. The lay-up competition was one for the ages, as it saw Cate Conlon, Emma David, Millie Southard, and Jadyn Shepard all score 15 lay-ups in 1 minute in the preliminary rounds. In the Final Round these 4 girls put on a show as Emma, Jadyn and Millie each had 14 lay-ups while Cate Conlon won the competition with 15 total.  Athens Academy’s own Cate Kilgore and Millie Southards won the Hot Shot competition by scoring 30 points. After lunch, the girls got into games where they had pool play to determine seeding for Sunday. The pool play closed with Team Palmer going 5-0, Team Jazz 4-1, Team Thomas 3-2, Team Mikayla 2-3, Team Corey 1-4 and Team Sorrells 0-5. Sunday was nothing but excitement as the #1 and #2 seed both advanced to the Finals where Team Palmer pulled out a hard-fought victory with Damaria Colburn being named MVP.  The Skills competitions saw Cate Conlon win the 3-point championship with 11 made 3’s. The skills course saw Taylor Khodabakhsh and 5th grader (yes, 5th grader!) Dakota Donlin set a record at 1:02. More to read later about the weekend Dakota Donlin had. The Fab 48 Camp All Star game was an absolute classic as it saw the Away team coached by Jazmin Allen, formerly of Emmanuel College, lead her team to a comeback victory while Class of 2029 Ella David won the MVP. The Fab 5 Team was announced after the game and CONGRATS to Ana Azola, Jade Jones, Tessa Violet Murdock, Jada Williams and Millie Southards. The MVP of the camp was Cate Conlon. This middle school season is going to be an epic one with so much talent everywhere. Check out some of the players you need to put on your radar below or you will miss out on seeing them this season.

Best of the Best

Must-Watch

  • Serenity Scott

    Dutchtown Middle School

From a middle school that has produced some great players, Serenity might be the best of the bunch. This is a Steve Nash-like point guard who can make passes to players you didn’t know were open or even playing. At times I thought she had eyes in the back of her head, and she made the play of the weekend in my opinion to close out Saturday. She crossed her man up behind the 3-point line, then penetrated the paint and went behind her back when the help came and make the prettiest pass to a cutting player who then made the lay-up. Serenity is really headed to some great things as a pass-first point guard who can score when she wants. This is the chief of Dutchtown because she is the master of a thousand dishes. I can’t wait to hear how her season goes but I would guess she’ll average a double double with 12 points and 10 assists a game. Her speed and vision will be a tall task for teams to stop especially for all 4 quarters. The best thing about Serenity though is her humility: she is as humble as I’ve seen.

  • Jada Williams

    Hebron Christian Academy

This young lady is going to be FUN to watch. She can impact EVERY single defensive possession with her shot blocking and shot altering ability. Only a 7th grader, Jada has LENGTH for days and, combined with her athleticism and effort/energy, makes her a PROBLEM. I felt like I was watching the 7th grade version of Giannis with the work she did in the paint on offense and defense. Jada had a double double in almost every game she played in over the two days of FAB 48. This kid is going to be even more of a problem as she continues to grow. Definitely one of the state’s top 2029 middle school post players.

Stock-Risers

  • Ella David

    Oconee Middle School

This kid’s stock is going through the roof right now. She’s only a 7th grader and I would take her on a varsity team right now if I was a varsity coach. I love a lot of facets of her game, and I keep telling myself she’s still young and is going keep improving. She is long and rangy which allows her to make it hard to get a ball through a passing lane. She processes information very rapidly and can make good decisions in transition as well as in the half court. She helped lead her team to a 5-0 record on Saturday and then helped them win the FAB 48 team championship BUT that wasn’t enough: she was MVP of the All-Star game as her team came back from double digits and won. Seeing her play last year, I thought she was very good but in just a year’s time she has really turned a lot of corners. This is a HUGE stock-riser heading into the 2023-24 season. DO NOT sleep on the name Ella David. I’ll go out on a safe limb here; she’s going to be a 1000 point scorer by early junior year and be the all time leading scorer at Oconee by the time she graduates. #GOWARRIORS

Top Surprise

  • Dakota Donlin

    Loganville Elementary School

Dakota Donlin is a 5th grader that got an invitation from her performance this past June at the IOC. She showed up and showed out for someone who hasn’t even hit middle school yet. She was on an undefeated championship team and wasn’t afraid to mix it up in the games with kids older and stronger than she currently is. She showed some great shooting as well as offensive moves like her floaters in the lane. I saw a lot of great stuff this weekend and I mean a LOT, but what Dakota did was very impressive. She was the top surprise to me. She even won a skills event where her team set a record of 1:02 for the skills competition. In a program as loaded as Loganville is, she might be the best pound for pound player regardless of grade. I can’t wait to see what she does over the next 3 years after she finishes off this last year of NEGFL. Her work ethic, skill and mentality showed why she’s one of the Top 5th graders in the state in that 2031 class.

Top Defensive Performers

  • Jade Jones

    Stockbridge Middle School

Jade has one of the fast crossovers I’ve seen in a middle school girls’ game, and it reminds me of the Tim Hardaway UTEP 2 STEP. That’s how nice her handles on the ball are. As great as she is with moves and counter moves, her defense is something to write home about. She really locks you down with her “on the ball defense” and she is a player that can switch ANY screen and her length and speed allows her to recover faster than most. I thought she was one of the top defensive players I saw at FAB 48 and one of the best defensive players I’ve seen in the girls’ game in quite some time. If she can get you retreating in the half court or in transition, you’re in trouble trying to stop her because she can come downhill with the ball faster than most people run. Her defense and her ball handling played a huge part in her getting on the FAB 48 All Camp team. Her attitude was another factor, as she was as respectful as you will come across. I had some time to chat with her and it was nice to hear “yes sir” and “no sir” from a middle schooler in 2023. I can’t wait to check out a Stockbridge Middle School Game this season and see Jade “the GLOVE” Jones locking down anyone she guards.

  • Damaria Colburn

    Habersham Middle School

Damaria is a very good player who can excel in scoring but works her tail off on the Defensive end. She loves to play defense on the other team’s best player and she locked up some good ones on Saturday and again on Sunday. It shows she brings a lot of value to that end of the floor for any team she plays on. She can handle the ball and has another gear when in transition, but what I love to see her do is finishing at the rim. I can’t count the number of times I saw her finish through contact against a longer, more athletic defender. She just has a knack for how to use her body and play through fouls. As a ball-handler, and when attacking the paint Damaria can finish with different moves and hit some mid-range jumpers as well. Her defense helped propel her to the MVP of the championship game. Damaria had an excellent showing at FAB 48 and is a player to be watching out for this season and in the future.

Top Offensive Performers

  • Jaydah Baker

    Putnam Middle School

Jaydah was easily one the best point guards over the last 2 days. She will always be one of the fastest players on the floor, and that is in terms of speed and quickness. If she continues to progress, she will be one of the best female players to every play at Putnam County. She showed me a lot of ability to run the teams she played on the offensive and defensive end of the floor. She can score easily from all three levels on the court and is a HIGH-level defender. She isn’t afraid to attack the rim in transition as she did throughout the FAB 48 Combine. I love the fact she didn’t quit regardless of the score, she always played hard any time she was in the game. What may have been most impressive about Jaydah is just how unselfish she is; she can take over the game and get to the basket or she can drive and set up a teammate. She plays as part of the team and really helps everyone around her get better as well as have success. I saw her on numerous times in the championship game looking for her teammates in good spots to score the basketball.

  • Sophia "SoSo" Beaty

    Liberty Middle School

I thought Sophia was as good as advertised and her offensive game backs that up. She can score on all three levels and can play off the ball or with the ball in her hands as the primary ball handler. I think she sees the game very methodically and doesn’t just run around making uncalculated decisions. She has a very good shot with great shot mechanics and can knock down a lot of shots in a short amount of time. You’ll never be out of a game if you have a Sophia on your team on offense. She has great height and length that makes her tough to play against if you’re on offense. She’s very good at letting her defense turn the other team over and scoring in transition with her athleticism. Sophia was definitely one of the better offensive players at the FAB 48 and she’s definitely a bucket.

Players I’m Keeping an Eye On

  • Sophia Smith

    Loganville Middle School

Sophia is a player that I’m looking forward to seeing what she does in 2023-24. She’s had a GREAT summer with how she did at the IOC in June and then how she closed out her FAB 48 camp. This is a gem of a player for the Loganville girls’ program. She is extremely hard working and just since the season ended this past winter, she looks like a different player to me. She has a lot of confidence in herself, and I think she is going to lead LMS to some big things this year. She can run the floor with speed but also has the IQ to make the right decision at the right time. She’s an encourager to her teammates and ALL the FAB 48 coaches loved her. Skill-wise she can shoot the 3 ball at a very good rate but can also put it on the floor and attack when she needs to. She can compliment players and she can be the top offensive threat if need be. Her defense was her cheat code this week as she made it hard for other players to turn the corner when she was in front of them. KEEP an EYE out for Sophia Smith in 2023-24!

  • Sadie Chambers

    Habersham Middle School

Sadie is one player whose game I didn’t know as much about for lack of really seeing her play much up close and live. She didn’t disappoint and she is a Coach’s DREAM. She will do anything for team or her coaches. She is a player that has great baseline drives, can shoot the ball from anywhere and can go coast to coast as well. She is a player who also has a high IQ and that is hard to stop. I felt like she was constantly outworking her opponents anytime I watched her play. She helped guide her team to the championship game and was an all-star selection as well. In the Championship game, she led both teams in scoring. he plays with a lot of finesse but also with a lot of GRIT at the same time. Sadie is a player to be keeping an eye on this season. I think she can help her team win a middle school championship and she can be the catalyst by leading them in several categories.

  • Emerson Reese

    Lumpkin County Middle School

Emerson is another player I’m going to keep an eye on this season. She is a definite team player that any coach would love to have on their team. She’s in 8th grade, but I think she does a very good job looking at the players that are around her and playing to the parameters of their strengths. Her court vision and awareness would make her an asset to any program and her shooting was also very good. I felt like her competitive maturity showed as she always competed regardless of the score. Her court vision is about 2 seconds ahead of everyone else on the court at times. I also think she has a solid long-range game with consistent ability to attack the rim as well.
